Walking is an excellent way to get exercise, relax and it has many health benefits. Plus the joy of being out in nature can help to improve your mood! There is the delight of seeing the birds and other animals, as well as your neighbors (with a mask & six-foot distance). It is a wonderful way to enjoy your neighborhood and surroundings, while benefiting your health … head to toe!

Some of the many benefits are strengthening the heart, improving the management of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. It also helps to lower blood sugar, which could help with diabetes. Walking briskly – or even a little slower, if briskly is not comfortable – helps relieve joint and muscular pain or stiffness. Exercise of any type … just moving … helps with diabetes, doctors have said for years.

Another important benefit of walking is burning calories. People who walk every day for 30 to 45 minutes have found it helpful in losing weight. To trim your waist, however, you need to walk more briskly. It is said to aim for three to four miles an hour. But keep in mind you will get plenty of benefits from strolling at a slower pace as long as you do it regularly and stick to it.

Walking needs to sustain your interest so you will continue to do it regularly … a pretty park, walking path or just around your neighborhood can keep you engaged. Wherever you walk, remember all the health benefits and that will keep you moving. Keep track of your steps, miles, calories, heartrate with a Fitbit (or a like device) and it helps to keep you striving to do better, which helps your health immensely!

The great benefit of boosting immune function and energy, makes a walk bright and early before you start your day or on a lovely evening to relax you for a great night’s sleep. Each of us should decide what works in our schedules and get out and start moving!
